Uniden Wireless Security Surveillance System UDW 10003- My Review

By

A handy little camera with impressive features

After shopping around for a surveillance camera and having bought one a year a go that just didn't do what was advertised, I settled for the Uniden UDW10003. I already had a friend that owned one and I was very impressed with it. My main use was for viewing the front of my house, the only front windows were the master bedroom and I wanted to be able to see out from all over the rest of the house. I also use it as a "nanny cam" for our grandaughter as well as for monitoring or watching any room that we aren't in.

The Camera

This is one of the best cameras that I have seen and especially for the price. It is very lightweight and resembles a small walkie talkie complete with movable antenna. It can transmit up to 500 ft away with no interference. It can be down the basement, outside, it doesn't matter, the reception is very good. It has a built in battery that will run around 4 hours straight so you can be wireless or it can be used with its power cord that plugs into any outlet. This is also the way that you re charge the battery. A built in microphone will pick up just about any nearby sound and it can be adjusted as well. I usually just stick mine in the window on the ledge. It is very thin and will stand or lean upright very easily, it also has a pull out stand on the back for other uses. The LED display lights on the side will indicate when it is charging, done or almost depleted via different colored lights.

The Monitor

The monitor itself is also very lightweight but durable. It features a 3.5" color display and really has a good picture. The other camera I bought advertised this as well but it was mostly grey with dashes of color, this one really does what it says and shows exactly what you are looking at in full color with no static, blurriness. It is quite amazing. In addition there is a digital zoom and you can pan from left to right off of that capability for an even closer view. I will say that the closer you are that you do lose a little clarity but not too much. I never use the zoom much because I prefer a bigger coverage area to view. The monitor is also run by a rechargable lithium polymer battery and can also be plugged into a wall outlet to charge or for longer display. The monitor's battery life is around 10 hours. There are also LED lights used in the same way as the camera and also a "charging" icon that displays on the top of the screen when in charge mode.

There is even more..

You can connect up to 4 cameras at a time for viewing multiple areas at the same time. Each camera can be purchased separately. You just switch the different views on the monitor. They will be named camera 1-4. I don't know anyone that has done this but I assume they will work just as well as one. One feature that really surprised me is the "nightvision". There is no separate setting, just leave the camera in a totally dark room, you will see the red circular lights on the front of the camera but the picture is astounding. It will be completely dark in the room and you will see all objects, sleeping baby etc just like if the room was dimly lit. The only problem I found with this is that when I use it in the window at night that the glass and outside lights cause a reflection and the picture is non viewable. I have used it outside at night, not in the window and it does fine. You just have to hide it and secure it so it doesn't get stolen or the wind blow it away, it is very light. I have only done this a few times for a couple of hours and then I bring it in for the night.

In addition to everything else this thing can be used for it can also be used as a recordable motion detection security camera. Download the included CD and it will walk you through all of these features where you can record in present time or future time via a timer. You can leave and set a time frame while you are gone and it will record it and save it to your computer. For the few hundred dollars that this system costs it does a lot. Some sites will have over inflated prices so be careful. You should be able to find a brand new one for 225-275.00 so don't pay more.
